lady_angelina. I expect this'll be TL;DR, as I can't seem to do pithy at all lately (lol sorry to anyone I've been tagging with walls-of-text). So follow the cut for TLDR on Star Trek (TOS mostly), Harry Potter, and Ace Attorney/Gyakuten Saiban.
Star Trek (TOS, with a side of TNG and V'ger^H^H^H^H^H Voyager)
1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
This, along with Doctor Who was something I watched with my dad as a small child. And some of my friends -- a family we were close to had two kids, a boy 2 years older (K) and a girl two years younger (J) who were both scifi fans and somewhere I even have a printout of bad DW self-insert (yes, all three of us) fanfic I co-wrote with K.
Then TNG started, and we watched weekly as a family -- it was the only exception to always eating dinner at the dinner table.
As much as I liked TNG, though, my heart had been captured by the original crew, and has always stayed there.
2. Do you think that you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
If I'm still in it after over twenty years, even though I was never deep into it, nah, I'm not going anywhere.
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
Episodes? There's favorites for nostalgia, and favorites-favorites. Probably the fourth movie for the conjunction of both. There are still a bunch of TOS eps I never managed to see, which I should fix. Books -- oh, lots. Vulcan Academy Murders, probably, for cheesy romance and more-optimistic views of Vulcan and Kirk being a fail!detective.
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
Not in a modern, organized way. I have a few icons, I'll very occasionally read fics that come across my radar (mostly crossovers or something -- if you know both Doctor Who and ST:TOS, go readastrogirl2's A Stranger In The City from last year's Multiverse that has both Jack Harkness's and Spock's voices absolutely spot-on and makes the crossover work). If I'm feeling nostalgic, I'm more likely to reread my shelf-of-books. Oddly enough, there was no overlap in books between what D---- had and what I had, except for one of the technical manuals. I have about thirty dogeared, bedraggled paperbacks -- I loved those books. Also, oddly enough, the vocabulary in them was very much the SAT basic list -- I remember being able to quote which book had taught me a word for a lot of one of the lists, since I'd started reading the ST books at around age 8.
Maybe someday I'll hunt down the online fandom, but eh. I'm not a K/S girl, and I actually want action-adventure if I'm reading TOS, which isn't really most of what fandom does.
5. Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?
Always and forever.
Harry Potter
1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
My RL f'list has some folks who got into HP after being in bandom -- RPS squicks me, but when one posted a snippet of her own AU I read it, and then she posted a rec (either directly or tangentially to another reclist, dunno) to a really long, plotty, post-war Remus/Hermione/Snape story (Care of Magical Creatures by ArsenicJade). Long, plotty, post-war romances is a lot of what I love in the fandom, though once I'd poked around a bit, my OTP ended up being Remus/Sirius so long plotty pre-war romances were also right up there.
2. Do you think that you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
I have moved on -- I rarely read anything HP any more, not even the ones I used to reread a lot. I mostly blame Rowling on that -- the last two books really didn't work so well for me, and I was already tiring a little of the fandom. Basically, I arrived just after OotP, and finally bowed out right after DH. I used to reread the books a lot -- I haven't done so since doing a back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back (yes, all of them) when I read DH. (It came out just before I had a sixteen-hour train ride. One piece of luggage was a bag containing just all seven books, since 4+ we have in hardback.)
Though now I'm tempted to go reread the first few books and see how the fic I loved stands up to time. Though most if not all of my HP bookmarks are on the dead laptop. (I have backups of it, though I'm not sure how late they go -- I had stopped using it for much other than surfing the 'web quite a while before it died, and I stopped doing backups when I stopped putting significant amounts of documents or burned music or anything on it.
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
Book 3, because I was a Marauder's fangirl. And Book 1, for having the initial hook. And lots of book 5, even if killing off Sirius made me sad. Movie-wise, I was never thrilled with any of the movies, and a lot of the actors didn't look like the characters in my head, so whatever.
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
Did, yes. Though I never wrote for it -- I left a lot of comments and this journal was created to lurk in it. Not so much any more. If Shoebox Project ever gets ressurrected from its death at the hands of Russian poetryspam, my other journal is one of the hosts for a chapter's worth of graphics. (They asked for people with paid/perm accounts to host the images because their servers couldn't keep up; I volunteered and put it on that one because it's a perm account (this one is now too, but it wasn't then). That's about the only real contribution I made to fandom.)
5. Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?
Eh, I have trouble recommending the canon any more, and I think everyone knows it's out there. Media oversaturation for the lose? Dunno.
Ace Attorney/Gyakuten Saiban
1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
I bought the first game because of reviews on GFAQs with comparisons to old-school text adventures. That was enough to make me keep an eye out for it, and pick it up used. springkink. (That story was a short post-game-1 slash piece -- Shift in Dynamic, or How Edgeworth Almost Let Phoenix Slip Through His Fingers, though that's the link to it on Objection! because I didn't save the other one.)
And that was that -- I knew I was getting fannish about the game, so I tried to stop reading fic until I'd finished the other two games, though I did go find Court Records and poked around while trying to stay somewhat spoiler-free. The fic blackout wasn't 100% successful -- I did read some other stuff but did manage to keep a lot of the revelations unknown until I'd raced through JFA and T&T. (I bought the latter two as imports because T&T wasn't out yet, and JFA was impossible to find at the time, and cheaper to import than to order used from Amazon/eBay/etc.)
It was the first fandom I ever reached out to people in -- I friended fic journals in HP and had occasional chats with authors after I left reviews, but I hadn't actually started talking to people. That changed with this one -- though a bunch of the folks involved don't post any more and I just run into them occasionally on RP!S. Which makes me kind of melancholy, but that's how fandom is -- you have fantastic conversations with people and then you or they wander off, and the connections grow dusty.)
2. Do you think that you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
I don't know -- I was afraid AJ would kill my love for it (I have issues with the game but it didn't), and I'm looking forward to Gyakuten Kenji a LOT. The fandom is a very different place than when I first found it -- it was tiny then -- still eligible for Yuletide, and folks were very friendly. Now it feels huge enough that I don't get that sense of connection when I read posts on big comms, and C-R is just someplace I go for news.
The scrutiny is also kind of nerve-wracking, especially when there are shitstorms on anon memes or RP!S because that sort of thing hurts my soul and I hate seeing fandom eat itself.
I expect eventually there will be something new and shiny that I love more than it, but as long as Capcom doesn't break the series too badly, I expect it'll just end up like Star Trek -- cherished and taken out of the box once in a blue moon.
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies/etc.?
I've done this list before: top five cases (order varies depending on my mood): 1-2, 1-4, 1-5, 3-4, 3-5. Cases I loved that don't get enough love (since my top list is pretty standard) -- 1-3, because watching Edgeworth change is nifty, 2-3 (<3 Moe), 3-3 (because it's interesting, damnit) and 4-3 (which was by far my favorite case in AJ, where Apollo and Klavier get to go be themselves without the weight of series history).
And I could go on and on about those cases or all of them, but not today.
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
That would be a YES. I've written fic, written essays, made icons, roleplayed, etc.
5. Do you think that more people should get into this fandom?
Even if more people means more wank and more of a crazy-fandom-is-crazy feel, yes. It's a fantastic series and I want to see more adventure gaming period, whether or not I go fannish over it. (Hotel Dusk was fantastic, and I think it getting published at all owes something to the success of the GS series.)
