Hi. You've reached Sarah's fandom journal. I have another one for talking with people I know in real-life; this one is for fandom/online gaming/etc. A bunch of you may have both added, and I will attempt not to duplicate anything. Content is generally all fandom-related (including fandom RP) -- mostly short squee/whining and occasional fic/meta.

I'm a 30-something-year-old (born in 1979, do the math, I don't update this entry every year) software engineer in the greater Boston area. Major hobbies (current and past) include general geekery, console RPGs, DDR, text adventures, cycling, greek & latin literature, NFL football, space exploration/aerospace research, and open-water swimming. (I.e. these are all the interests that I've been known to treat in the same fashion as traditional fandoms.)

Current fandoms: Doctor Who/Torchwood/SJA, Phoenix Wright

Friending policy: Feel free to friend/defriend at will. This journal is for fandom, and people float in and out of fandoms all the time. If I've missed a notification and you want me to friend you back and I haven't, just say so. Also, I don't currently have very many friends-locked entries in this journal and don't plan to. What you see is pretty much what you get. I'll occasionally friends-lock something if it could possibly identify my employer. I realize that it's pretty easy to get to my real identity from here, but I don't want to make this journal show up if someone googles my employer.

Another note: Even if this journal goes quiet for extended periods of time, I'm likely still reading/lurking. I just don't always have anything to say, or RP ate my soul. Again.

If you see any of these around, yes, it's me. Some of these have never been used and aren't likely to be. This is mostly so that I don't forget them myself.
not especially long, but I really don't expect anyone to read this, either )

So there is this meme going around about rec'ing one storyline per Doctor as a Newbie Guide to Who, and since I have OPINIONS I will take a stab.

Spoiler cut for an almost 50-year old show? You betcha. )
So, a bit back, [livejournal.com profile] lady_angelina lent me Ghost Trick (and Trace Memory, but I haven't gotten to the latter yet), and I finished it this morning.

Review contains spoilers for the first few minutes, game themes, gameplay, and for one plot point which is reasonably early on; it does not contain any for the big endgame spoilers.

Spoiler cut ahoy! )

That reoccurring roleplaying HMD MEME has gone up again. Crit = love, especially now that I have a character that is well-recognized enough that People Having Opinions is more likely. <3

Anyone looking for me on AIM may find me scarce; our internet is glitching in and out -- it hangs up for ~5-100 seconds every few minutes, which is deeply annoying when browsing/whatever, but is completely fatal to AIM as it locks up going INTARWEBS WHERE HAVE YOU GONE for much longer than the connection has actually dropped.

PMs and email are better. <3 And eventually perhaps you will have an update with substance in this space; lengthy post-writing energies have been eated by work and life, and short brainspatter has all ended up on plurk. (Which is the same username as here; anyone who wants rp-related nonsense and general whining is free to add me there.)

Spent the week dithering about doing Yuletide -- but as nifty as some of the tiny fandoms (and not so tiny, Ace Attorney I'm giving you a funny look) on there are, I think I'd end up failing. So I'm just going to vow to look at the extra prompts in January and have a stab at writing one in the off-season.

Also, roleplaying HMD meme

I am still kind of terrible with image editing, but I'm less fail than I was a year ago, so I will try this out.

1) Create a graphic (200 x 200 max size) to represent your personal "candy". It should have your username on it, but otherwise can feature whatever you want. Make it something special since it's self-representative.

2) Make a post with the subject "trick or treat?". Put your "candy" somewhere in it, and be sure to repost these instructions.

3) Then, go around other people's LJs and reply to them with either "trick" or "treat". If you reply with "trick", they will give you an LJ/Plurk/AIM/etc. dare that you have to perform before taking their candy. If you're too wimpy for that, simply say "treat" and take their candy.

4) List all your collected candies in your original "trick or treat?" post to show off your collection!

First, for the RPers, my HMD meme thread.

And this isn't that long, so no cut.

Day 3 - A game that is underrated

I love a lot of games that are obscure, old, niche, or just plain underplayed, but underrated? That's a bit of a puzzle. Most of the games I've liked have gotten a fair shake in the press/blogosphere/whatever.

I think I'll go with a game and a series from an indie developer that I spent a lot of time playing at the end of college and through grad school: Nethergate (link goes to the updated version that will run on modern machines; I actually like the original better for some finicky gameplay reasons and nostalgia), but it's a great game. As is their Avernum series, although I've only played the first three of those. I sort of stopped hanging on every game they came out with when I bought my PS2, and that's kind of a shame.

They're old-school dungeon-crawler RPGs, with a party you pretty much come up with on your own, although Nethergate adds some significant limits to your more generic D&D-style smörgåsbord. They were coming out when everything was moving to stories where all the protagonists had stories, rather than just the world. Voice acting and graphics have taken some freedom away; usually I don't mind, but this game is a nice reminder that freedom can be rewarded. They're BIG games -- the world is huge, full of little things, and in all of them you end up playing a bunch of semi-nobodies who get Swept Up in a massive story and the focus is on the epic.

OK I am too tipsy to actually write anything of substance after a friend's bachelor party (where I ran into [livejournal.com profile] leora who mentioned LJ-support and we realized we had a bunch of friends in common, some IRL and some internet, like [livejournal.com profile] lady_angelina. It's a small internet.) So I will continue this meme.

Seen a variety of places, but proximate cause = [livejournal.com profile] lady_angelina, here's 30 days of video games. It will probably take me at least twice that long to get through it, as I'll just post another day when I feel like it, but here goes!

Argh, why does RL give me no time to destress and do creative things. I probably should hiatus someone or something, but damnit I want fun things.

That said, no posts from me tonight; if I miss a bulletin post or something I should reply to, kick me and I'll do it later?

first, PSA: mobile posting = epic fail typos. Sorry. I haven't been fixing them on LJ comments and plurk unless they're desperately unfortunate. I've been trying to catch them in RP posts but if you see something silly, kick me. The iPad autocomplete/autocorrect is often very smart but sometimes does ridiculous things, and it corrects everything to a legitimate word so the browser spellcheck doesn't catch typos as much.

Second, meme from [livejournal.com profile] lady_angelina because this is something we could all do more of:

List one thing you like about your roleplaying.

I'm going to go with metaphors and similes. I am not God's Gift to LJRP in anything, but I've worked darn hard at figuring out when and how to make metaphors have punch rather than purple, and I think it's paid off. I'm still finding my feet in that regard with Lana -- I use them more with her than Taura, and much much less than S.T., but I will find a happy medium there.

There was discussion on plurk of baking. I am not typing recipes in commentboxes, and besides, I had most of these typed up, and the rest I'd been meaning to move off shreds of paper into digital form. A few are directly as my mom emailed me, hence some wide variation in phrasing between recipes. (I don't think I'd ever say to beat anything vigorously unless we're talking kinky fanfic here. ...and now watch this post lead someone in my family to find this journal due to recipe searching or something, because yeah, that'd be my luck.)

Other notes: unless noted, ingredients should be at room temperature, including eggs/milk/butter. (I added that to the first recipe but not the others.)

a) RP HMD meme, as usual.

b) I am still feeling absolutely spaced out and am sort of mini-hiatusing. Posts will come when words quit being slippery little buggers.

c) ...I bought an iPad & data plan. So once words are less difficult, I should be able to tag from anywhere without adding more stress to my shoulders carrying a laptop that only works where there's wi-fi anyway. Expect typos and the odd formatting fail (at least in non-RP comments where I won't do extra editing) as I get used to it.

d) despite not feeling up to tags, why do I want to throw Odysseus in the spring of drowned piglet over at FoC. I'd have to canon review first and do not have even remotely the energy. whywhywhy brain. I'd say that's the problem with having so many characters that I don't have the space for throwaway ones, but I didn't throw new people in the Fountain before, either, except for Lana a bit. Because it takes me forever to get into a character's head to the point of potentially writing them, and I can't seem to do it casually. I envy the people who can play around with a character; it's sort of all or nothing for me on whether or not I can get in their head.
Okay, so I was AWOL on RP-stuff all weekend, but I'm trying to get back in the groove. Expect backtags shortly. (I'm skipping the buses back unless there's unexpected eventage, in which case I will just be mondo late to the party.)

I'm a little spacey due to the muscles in my neck still considering strangling me despite giving in and getting a massage earlier, so if anything is completely nonsensical, lemme know.

Problem appears to have gone away. Woot.

My email is down right now -- the primary one, to which all my RP notifs (assuming LJ is sending them) and PMs etc. go.

Best ways to reach me: comment to this post, I'll be checking it manually. And I'll edit it when I have email again.

...also, apparently D. just finished Mr. Darcy, Vampyre despite never having read Pride and Prejudice.
[livejournal.com profile] puddingtreat! I was thinking of either throwing Taura into late afternoon or moving Lana somewhere else since she's done talking to the Sheriff, and you've got a bunch of folks free. Want either of them, and if so, which and for whom?

[livejournal.com profile] aphephobia can probably tell from the subject line what I'm about to rec, but for everyone else, I figured I'd finally put this pimpage out there.

The Administration, by [livejournal.com profile] ms_manna. A fully constructed, plausible near-future dystopia, well-written, realistic, respectful treatment of kink, two complicated main characters and deep psychological drama, and serious, interesting plots that aren't just window dressing for the relationship drama? Yes please.

The reason I'm pimping this now is that the sixth book in the series just got published, and I figured hey why not. But the original version (the published version has had an edit pass and contains some added stories) is still available on-line, so it's pretty much the ultimate in try-before-you-buy. The original stories are at here at Manna's site (which also contains a full set of warnings -- while well-handled kink is a good description, there is also a fair bit of potentially triggery content due to hello dystopia), and the books are Mind Fuck, Quid Pro Quo, Games and Players, Control, Quis Custodiet, First Against the Wall.

I'll finish by quoting the author's own back-of-the-book blurb for the series, which says it better than I probably did.
